Acne is a skin condition that not only
teenagers suffer from, but adults can also suffer from as
there are many causes and triggers for it. In addition to
actual acne triggers, there are also lots of strange acne
myths regarding these triggers.
A very common misconception about acne
is that it is said to be caused by poor hygiene. It is true
that acne is caused because of a mixture of dead cells and
sebum found under the skin. However although gentle cleaning
of the skin with soap and water can keep your skin healthy,
it is not sufficient to clear skin infections. It is not
advisable to scrub your skin too hard as this only aggravates
the acne.
Another strange acne myth is that grease
or fat, and chocolate causes acne. There is no scientific
proof backing this; or that foods like potato chips and
French fries cause acne. Of course, these foods are not
healthy, and should always be eaten in moderation.
Sex is said to cause acne
Sex is said to cause acne. In fact, everything
from masturbation to celibacy has been linked to be triggers
for acne. However this is false as although there is a connection
between hormone levels and sex, there is no proof of any
relation between sex levels and sebum production.
It is said that one tends to grow out of
acne, and that it is no use treating it. However this is
not true as acne can last for a few weeks or for as long
as a few years. So instead of living with your acne problem,
it is better to try out the many over the counter medications
available to eliminate the discomfort and embarrassment
of acne. And if you suffer from extreme cases of acne, you
can approach a dermatologist for help in treating your condition.
Popping pimples are of no help
Don’t think that acne only attacks teenagers,
like stated in another acne myth. Acne can attack anyone;
even adults in their 30s and 40s. Although it may look like
the acne is a superficial condition, this myth is not actually
true as the physical disfigurement that arises with extreme
cases of acne can lead to lots of psychological stress.
In fact, acne sufferers have been linked with depression,
social withdrawal and low self esteem.
Some people say that popping and squeezing
pimples will help in getting rid of them faster. However,
this is not true as it only aggravates the acne problem
as it spreads acne causing bacteria. Moreover, squeezing
of pimples can lead to permanent scarring.
Makeup does not cause acne.
It is true that sunlight helps dry out
excess oils on the skin; however prolonged exposure to the
sun eliminates the long term benefits of sun exposure and
increases skin damage and cancer.
It is generally said that makeup causes
acne; however although some makeup may clog pores, there
are many noncomedogenic and nonacnegenic makeup products
that are safe to use and don’t cause acne. In fact, some
of these products are made from ingredients that are used
in best acne treatments.
